Kamchatka Snow  sheep (Ovis nivicola) (Chubook)

The Kamchatka Snow Sheep is endemic to the Kamchatka.

These rams are dark chocolate colored hair in summer and light grey-brown in  winter. They have massive horn. Kamchatka Snow Sheep  males, are about 25 percent bigger than females; the males’ horns are much larger The body weight of rams about 80 – 150 kg (180-330 pounds), and its height at the withers is about 0,8 – 1,1 metre (31-39 inches) in the largest subspecies.

A record trophy of the Kamchatka snow sheep is 179 3/8″ 

Score. The length of the horns is  44 3/8″ (113 см) left and  44 4/8″ (113 см) right) was registered in the SCI Record book  by hunter Dieter Pfanneinstein in 2014

Kamchatka Snow Sheep (Chubook)  are a close relative of the Stone sheep of North America that inhabits the mountains of the Kamchatka peninsula. The Kamchatka Snow Sheep hunt like all mountain sheep hunts requires a good level of physical . The hunting areas are located north-west in Central Kamchatka around 200- 300 km north of the capital Petropavlovsk.

Hunting season

August 1 – October 15

Schedule:

  • Day 1 – Arrive Petropavlovsk, clear Customs and overnight in hotel, If it is needed (Depending on the time of arrival in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky).  Or Depart Petropavlovsk for hunting area
  • Day 2 – Depart Petropavlovsk for hunting SUB or helicopter  transport to base camp for overnight.
  • Day 3 – Depart base camp on helicopter or ATV for mountains.
  • Day 3 – to Day 12 – Hunting snow sheep.
  • Day 13 – Return to base camp and depart for Petropavlovsk, overnight in hotel.
  • Day 14 – Depart Petropavlovsk for home.

Hunting:

This is a classic  hunting as well  most mountain sheep hunting. You use mountain tent camp during hunting  for 2 – 5 days at a time. From the camp you walk on foot to a distance of 5 – 7 km in search of a suitable trophy ram using binoculars and telescopes. Our guides will find in advance the habitats of sheep. You can see sheep and bears directly from the tent, but to get a good trophy, you have to work hard. The distance of the shot is usually 200 meters (220 yard) and more. Your guide will assist you in finding rams then plan shooting when a suitable trophy ram is found.

Accommodations:

You will be accommodated in base camp in a comfortable house with separate bedrooms for one or two , satellite TV, WI-FI, internet, shower  and sauna,  and there is also a full time cook and an interpreter. During the hunt you will stay in the mountains tents. Our tents are equipped with beds and accessories. However, you must have your own sleeping bag.

Weather:

In August daytime temps are +15 to +25 degrees Celsius and night time temps are from 0 to +10 degrees Celsius. Rain and sometimes snow can be encountered so you should take appropriate clothing for these conditions.

In September daytime temps are +5 to +15 degrees Celsius and night time temps are from 0 to +3-4 degrees Celsius. Rain and sometimes snow can be encountered so you should take appropriate clothing for these conditions.
