There are few places in the world that can captivate quite like Kamchatka, Russia’s most scenically authentic region. Kamchatka is a place of extraordinary beauty, rushing rivers, hot springs, and snow-capped peaks. Getting here takes time and effort, and exploring the region even more so, but few visitors experience anything other than being stunned.

Kamchatka is a distant peninsula in the North East part of Russia. Yet, it is the place where the day begins in Russia. Kamchatka is 9 time zones away from Moscow. When it is midnight in Moscow, the capital of the Russian Federation, it is 9 a.m. in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the capital of Kamchatka Region.

The Kamchatka Peninsula is a fish-shaped territory of 1200 kilometers long (750 miles) and 450 km wide (280 miles) at its widest point. Indeed, not only this peninsula is a fish-shaped territory with numerous lakes, rivers and streams, it is famous for its fish abundance. There are as many as 10 types of salmon, 6 types of flounder, trout, cod,  sea bass, Greenland halibut, Alaska pollack, and herring. Besides, there are 6 types of crabs, sea urchins, and scallops.

Without doubt, the symbol of Kamchatka is the brown bear (Ursos arctos). Kamchatka has the highest concentration of bears in Russia. Some of the other mammals in Kamchatka include: Sable, Mink, Wolf, Red fox, Reindeer (Caribou), Moose, Lynx, Kamchatka Snow Sheep,  and Wolverine.

The main settlement of the peninsula and the capital of Kamchatka Region is the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

The city is a port and has one of the biggest harbor in the world that can easily anchor a thousand vessels. It is also  a center of industry, science and adventure tourism.

The Cossack, Vladimir Atlasov, apparently “discovered” Kamchatka in 1697. He built two forts on the Kamchatka River, which became Russian trading camps.

The famous marine explorer Vitus Bering discovered it in 1740, when he chose the Avacha Bay as a base for sailing across the Pacific Ocean to the shores of future Russian America. From that time, Petropavlovsk was the main base for all subsequent round-the-world expeditions. The ships of Captain James Cook,  La Perouse, Ivan Krusenstern, Captain Charles Clark, Vasily Golovnin, admiral Stepan Makarov,  and other expeditions all visited Kamchatka.

Kamchatka is, without exaggeration, one of the most spectacular regions in Russia. The main attractions of Kamchatka are volcanic calderas, stone sculpture “parks” and lakes in craters, geysers and mineral springs, all in pristine condition.
